It also welcomes attention to the relationships, identities, and archetypal forces that shape experience, including class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, culture, physical or mental ability, and religion. The emphasis is on essence and feeling, stepping out of talk-heavy modes so that a living image can emerge. As stories are enacted and mirrored, authenticity grows, trust develops through shared commitment, and empathetic listening deepens within the group and toward mystery. Longer stories may include questions for the teller, opportunities to direct the play toward a desired expression or alternative ending, and the option to invite others into the scene. Participants are encouraged to bring evocative objects or props. Attendance is limited to nine people and RSVP is requested. The workshop at Bombyx is led by the Rio-based ensemble and covers a short history of choro, how different instruments fit into the ensemble, and the rhythmic variety within the tradition. Participants then try three choros together in contrasting styles. It welcomes players of string instruments, winds, percussion, and keyboard or accordion, and serves as a stepping stone to a weekly local choro study group launching in the fall with Brazilian guitarist Mauro Correa. The concert showcases Água de Moringa with Mariana Baltar. Together for more than 35 years, the group is grounded in traditional choro, reflected in instrumentation that includes six and seven string guitars, cavaquinho, pandeiro, bandolim, and clarinet. With ten albums released, they have performed and taught throughout Brazil and in France, Portugal, and Colombia. Baltar collaborates frequently with the ensemble and in 2019 recorded an album with them, Os Arcos: Paixão e Morte, honoring composer Aldir Blanc.

Poet Gail Thomas is the author of several collections, with poems in many publications and honors that include the Charlotte Mew Prize and recognitions from the Massachusetts Center for the Book and others. Peter Medeiros teaches novel writing in PVWW’s 10-Month Manuscript Program, holds an MFA from Emerson College, has published fiction since 2013 including in GigaNotoSaurus, and is represented by JABerwocky Literary Agency. Julia Morgan McKenzie teaches memoir in the PVWW program, studied at Bard College, Harvard, and Stonecoast, wrote The Book Keeper, and has essays in venues such as Electric Literature and The Masters Review while working on a second memoir. Michael Mercurio is a poet, editor, and critic with work in Palette Poetry, Thrush, The Common, and more, and he curates the virtual series What The Universe Is, where established and emerging poets read together monthly. Melenie Freedom Flynn is at work on a memoir supported by grants from the Elizabeth George Foundation and the Massachusetts Cultural Council, has residencies from MacDowell and Djerassi, won Vela Magazine’s nonfiction contest for Message from Your Inmate, and brings a background in theater with performances at noted stages.
