A book giveaway and donation day offers in-building browsing with scheduled entry windows designed to keep lines moving. Roughly 110 people are welcomed per session, and you may rejoin the line for another turn. When you exit, please count your books and record the total for tax purposes. Families are welcome, with a limit of one parent accompanying up to three children, and every child must be with an adult. Caregivers are asked to closely supervise children, as the kids area can be very busy. To help with traffic flow, leave large boxes, wagons, or carts outside the exit and carry books out a few armfuls at a time. Trained service animals are welcome, but pets are not. Plans may change due to weather, and any cancellations will be shared on the organization’s website and social media. Book donations are accepted only during the event’s designated donation window at the garage door on the west side of the building, not where the browsing line forms. Drive past the entrance and mural to reach the drop-off, where volunteers can direct you and help unload. There is no need to wait in the browsing line to donate. All books are welcome with no genre restrictions, with especially high demand for popular fiction, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, classics, non-diet cookbooks, science topics, English dictionaries, and Bibles. Popular and hobby magazines are also accepted. Donations are limited to seven boxes per family, and boxes must be small enough for one person to lift. Media items are not being accepted this month, and encyclopedia sets or sets of academic, technical, or professional journals cannot be accepted. If you would like a tax receipt, mention it at drop-off so your books can be counted separately. The organizers cannot pick up donations, but volunteers will unload from your vehicle at the drop-off. If you have more than the limit, contact the organizers through the website. You are welcome to return books you previously adopted. There are plenty of books throughout the event, and session time limits may be relaxed when crowds are light.

Drug Free All Stars is hosting a community sporting festival at Annapolis Recreation & Parks, Griscom 1, focused on drug education and awareness. The day features free soccer and basketball clinics, a moon bounce, an obstacle course, and free food. Youth attendees can receive a T-shirt and a swag bag. A kickball matchup will see Drug Free All Stars face One Annapolis. Educational groups and vendors will share prevention information and useful resources, creating a family friendly atmosphere with plenty of activities.

Now in its third year, this golf tournament brings together golfers, donors, sponsors, and volunteers at the Country Club at Woodmore for a full day on the course in support of brain cancer research. Open to every skill level, the tournament is dedicated to helping drive out glioblastoma, with proceeds supporting research.

Volunteers will spread protective mulch, clean playground structures, and remove hazards to help make the space safer for all. NPS Rangers will provide a safety briefing at the Sweetgum Picnic Area, and all equipment will be supplied. Wear long sleeves and pants, choose closed-toed shoes, and bring water.

An overnight nature camp for adults features a day of sailing aboard Lady Maryland along the Chesapeake Bay, continuing into the Magothy River Sanctuary on the way to an overnight stay at Camp Whippoorwill, followed by a return voyage the next morning. Expect exploration both on the water and on land while watching for the many creatures that inhabit each habitat. While aboard, learn sailing skills and take part in hands-on marine science with the Living Classroom Foundation, including water quality testing, towing for plankton with microscope study, trawl fishing to observe marine life, oyster dissection, and bird morphology and identification, plus time spent setting sail and steering the ship. After arriving at camp, shift focus to the forest with trail wandering, bird listening, and a campfire with s’mores, then continue into the night to look for owls, moths, spiders, and the curious world of zombie fungi. This experience takes place at Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park and Museum.

Grounded in the celebration of Black history and the collective efforts of local creatives and wellness advocates for children, families, and neighborhoods, the Street Fair now serves as the culminating event of the Museum’s Existential Determinants of Health (E.D.O.H.) Trace the final chapter of Edgar Allan Poe’s life on a guided bus experience that explores his legacy and the lingering mystery of his death in Baltimore. The tour sets out from the Baltimore Visitor Center at the Inner Harbor and features key stops connected to Poe’s story, including a historical look at Gunner’s Hall, the hospital where he died, Westminster Hall and Burying Ground with two of Poe’s graves, the Poe statue, and a guided visit to the Edgar Allan Poe House and Museum. The Poe House is a historic building and is not ADA accessible, with no elevator or ramp to the second floor. A tour with luncheon runs about 3.5 hours, while a bus-only option lasts about 2.5 hours. The lineup is a rotating family of standout players. Collaborators have included guitarists Max Flansburg, Logan Ledger, Sam Leslie, Henry Moser, Jesse Harper, and Jefferson Hamer; mandolinists Dominick Leslie, Joe K. Walsh, Matt Flinner, and Jesse Appelman; clawhammer banjo player Victor Furtado; fiddlers John Mailander, Alex Hargreaves, Nate Leath, Shad Cobb, and Phoebe Hunt; cellist Nat Smith; and Dobro player Todd Livingston. They have shared bills with icons across genres, placed songs in film and television, appeared in advertising, and earned recognition from the Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for their musical and cultural impact. Their latest full-length release, At Home with Southern Culture on the Skids, was created during the stay-at-home period, with 11 tracks recorded largely in Rick Miller’s living room and finished at his studio, The Kudzu Ranch. The lead radio single, Run Baby Run, surges with garage grit and a standout vocal from Mary Huff, while the album folds acoustic colors into the band’s signature sound. Expect a set that swings through rockabilly, surf, country, folk, R&B, and garage-streaked rock and roll, delivered with the high spirits and sharp musicianship that have defined them for years. Los Lonely Boys bring their signature sound to Rams Head On Stage with Lisa Morales. The Garza brothers, Henry, Jojo, and Ringo, have long centered their music on family. After stepping back from the road in 2019 to focus on loved ones, they returned in 2022 with renewed energy, even opening for The Who. Hailing from San Angelo, Texas, they shaped a blues-tinged Texican rock and roll style that found a global audience. A demo reached Willie Nelson’s nephew, and Willie soon championed the trio, inviting them to perform at Farm Aid and collaborating with them in his studio. Their self-titled debut arrived in 2003, later re-released by Epic, and soared on the strength of the hit single Heaven, which reached number one and earned a Grammy. The album stayed on the Billboard Top 200 for more than 76 weeks and sold over two million copies. Collaborations have included Carlos Santana and Willie Nelson, and their story has been chronicled in the documentary Cottonfields and Crossroads. After Henry was injured in a 2013 onstage accident, the band regrouped and reaffirmed their commitment to what matters most, family and music. Paranormalist and mentalist Vince Wilson presents an evening of gothic magic that straddles the line between the impossible and the merely unexplained, drawing on twenty-five years of experience. The Dust Bowl Faeries, an accordion-driven ensemble from New York’s Hudson Valley with a dark cabaret flair and a touch of woodland witchery, deliver a live music murder mystery. Later, Vince Wilson leads a séance seeking contact with Edgar Allan Poe and Harry Houdini, acknowledging that any reply from beyond remains between the guests and the veil. Additional performers and surprises will be revealed. VIP ticket holders receive early entry, first choice of seats, and a few undisclosed perks.

Experience a crisp autumn run in College Park at Acredale Park with 5k and 10k distances on a shaded, paved path. The route is an out-and-back that stays fairly flat and scenic, and the 10k completes two laps of the 5k course. This event awards points toward the Year-Long 5k, 10k, and Back of the Pack Series, as well as the Fall Series, with the Back of the Pack designed to give higher pace runners a chance to compete with peers and earn points. A virtual option is available for those who prefer to participate remotely. Runners receive a finisher medal, a technical event shirt, and chip timing. Multiple water stations are placed along the courses, with sports drink available at some locations, and portable restrooms are on site. Live results are provided with an on-site QR code for instant access, post-race results are posted afterward, and optional SMS runner tracking is available at registration. Awards recognize the top three men and women overall, plus first and second place in the following age groups: 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 plus. Staff photos are shared on social media after the race, and there is a social media challenge that offers a chance at 50 percent off a future race when tagged posts are selected. Packet pickup takes place at the event, and race day registration is offered, though shirt sizes are not guaranteed for those registering that day and prices may increase. T-shirt and medal designs are released prior to the race, and course maps are available from the organizer. Parking is available at Acredale Community Park. Volunteers support water stations, course marshaling, and the finish line. The race is planned to take place rain or shine, with any adjustments communicated by the organizer. Help care for the butterfly garden at Roland B. Sweitzer Community Park. Volunteers will clip or remove fallen stems, pull invasive plants, and monitor for new growth from plantings added last fall. Participants should wear work clothes and a hat, dress for the weather, bring water, and bring any weeding or gardening tools they have, including pruners or loppers. Some shared tools will be available.

The First Sunday Arts Festival transforms West Street and Calvert Street into a family-friendly celebration with more than 150 vendors, food trucks, live music, and cafe dining at seven restaurants. The Accidental Poet will have a booth on West Street near Author Alley and will share story readings for listeners of all ages. This series takes place on the first Sunday of each month from May through November.

The Buena Vista Orchestra brings the spirit of Cuba’s celebrated repertoire to Rams Head On Stage, with a rotating cast of artists tied to the Buena Vista Social Club, AfroCuban All Stars, and the bands of Celia Cruz, Omara Portuondo, Chucho Valdés, Willie Colón and more. Presented by SSK Music Presents as part of a USA tour, the performance is led by virtuoso Cuban violinist Rolando Morejón Reyes, whose background includes leading the Orquesta de Enrique Jorrín and work with Omara Portuondo, Willie Colón, Cachao López and Oscar D’León. He appears alongside trumpeter Antonio Perigo, percussionist Miguel Valdés, pianist Helder Rojas, trombonist Yosmel Garcerarn, and Latin Grammy nominee and percussionist Pepe Epsinosa, among others, with many players connected to the original Buena Vista Social Club performances. Early on, Luther hit the road with RL Burnside’s Ass Pocket of Whiskey tour, and the group has toured steadily since 1998.
