    Friday Night Skate

National World War I Memorial , Washington · verified Jul 31
    Free

Skate through Washington, DC at night and take in the monuments glowing after dark. The group meets at the National World War I Memorial, also called Pershing Park, at the northeast corner by the cement benches. The pace begins gently toward the Capital, continues along the Mall and past museums to the National Monument, then moves on to the Lincoln Memorial through the World War II Memorial. Those who prefer a shorter outing can turn back for a route of about 5.5 miles returning to Pershing Park. From the Lincoln Memorial, the longer course continues to Haynes Point via Ohio Drive, with a choice to add a 3 mile loop for a total of about 12 miles or skip the loop for about 8.5 miles. Several options exist to make the return to Pershing Park, selected according to the group’s skills and preferences. Most of the route is flat with smooth pavement, with a gradual descent from the Washington Monument and a brief 40 yard slope between the Lincoln and Ohio Drive. If participants are more advanced, the plan can include crossing the 14th Street bridge, taking on a few rolling hills, and finishing with a downhill through the 12th Street tunnel. Lights are encouraged so everyone can see and be seen, such as a helmet mounted bike light, decorative lights, or lighted wheels. If weather is poor, a cancellation notice will appear on the event post. Participation is at each skater’s own risk.
