    The Planet D Nonet

    Cliff Bell's, 76 Adams Ave W, Detroit · verified Oct 2
    See details

Planet D Nonet presents music centered on Echoes of Harlem: A Salute to Duke Ellington Vol 2, a new release that extends the group’s longtime devotion to Ellington. The project grew naturally while touring after the prior album, Blues to Be There: A Salute to Duke Ellington, which reached number 16 on the JazzWeek chart, held the top spot on both the Roots Music Report Jazz and Big Band Jazz charts for twenty-three consecutive weeks, spent fifteen weeks on the NACC Top 30 peaking at number 1, and earned placements on several 2023 year-end lists from national critics and radio outlets. Volume 2 weaves together fresh charts and deep ties to Ellington’s legacy, including selections connected to Anatomy of a Murder from an Upper Peninsula tour, James O’Donnell’s influence leading to the inclusion of Echoes of Harlem and Azalea arranged by Jeff Cuny, and collaborations with Andrew Homzy and Jeff Cuny that brought Rocks in My Bed from the Smithsonian collection, featuring vocals by Camille Price. Tbone Paxton leads a lively take on Caravan shaped by the band’s live head arrangement, while Rick Steiger’s suggestion La Plus Belle Africaine spotlights Ellington’s later period in a new arrangement by Trevor Lamb. The result is a program that balances history, personal connection, and contemporary vision in celebration of Ellington’s music.

    See details

The Aya Sekine Trio unites pianist Aya Sekine with Detroit bassist Jaribu Shahid and drummer Jonathan Barahal Taylor for a program that blends Sekine’s own pieces, composed during chapters in Singapore, Japan, and New York, with intimate reimaginings of jazz standards. The music carries a strong storytelling sense and a deep rhythmic foundation rooted in Black music traditions, shaped by Sekine’s background as a percussionist. Born in Minoh City, Osaka Prefecture, Sekine is a jazz pianist, improviser, composer and arranger, educator, visual artist, and community practitioner. Celebrated for a flexible, wide-ranging approach that remains grounded in bebop and straight-ahead jazz, Sekine’s playing emphasizes rhythm, emotion, and in-the-moment creation within the lineage of Black American music. Sekine grew up immersed in music, art, and fashion and spent formative years in Singapore, where a multicultural environment informed a multifaceted musical voice. Early experiences included percussion in a brass band and playing in a rock band, alongside deep listening to soul, funk, Motown, and blues. After studying jazz at Berklee College of Music, Sekine moved to New York in 1994 and became active across the city’s diverse scene. Since 2002, long-term work in Singapore has encompassed performance, education, and community building, including helping establish live music at Blu Jaz Cafe, founding the non-profit We Love Jazz SG, and leading the community improvisation workshop Jungle Jam. In recognition of contributions to International Jazz Day, Sekine was invited by the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz and UNESCO to perform at the Global Host Celebration in Melbourne. Since 2018, Sekine has also developed a visual arts practice. In 2022, Sekine left Singapore, obtained U.S. permanent residency under the EB-1 category for the arts, spent a period working in Japan, and relocated to Detroit in 2024. Current activities include collaborations with prominent local musicians such as Wendell Harrison, appearances at the Detroit Jazz Festival and other festivals, and teaching at the Michigan State University Community Music School Detroit. Sekine also founded Double Strut LLC in Detroit, released the album High! as part of the improvisational duo Junk Jazz, and runs ongoing initiatives like Ayaschool and the Brazilian Music Study Club Detroit, which cultivate community, process, and improvisation.
