Machine Knitting Camp is a hands-on retreat inside the Knitshop at Rocking Horse Farm, welcoming both beginners and advanced machine knitters for learning, fellowship, and new experiences in a casual, homespun setting with comprehensive, practical instruction. Participants can expect to head home with completed pieces or fresh inspiration to finish works in progress. Attendees typically bring a knitting machine with tools labeled with their name, and a limited number of machines may be reserved in advance. Bringing snacks to share and a smile helps keep the atmosphere friendly and fun. The camp provides tables, chairs, electricity, instructors, and knitting machine mentors, along with optional classes and some one-on-one time with an instructor. Machine oil and cleaning supplies are on hand, and patterns, yarn, extra needles, tools, weights, and other supplies are available for purchase on site. An opening ceremony creates time to meet fellow knitters, and a closing ceremony offers a chance to share what was learned. Each day begins with setup and connecting with other knitters, and instructors kick things off with a Knitting Machine TLC session to get machines ready to stitch. A daily soup lunch break adds a cozy pause, followed by Table Talk, a round table tradition that explores topics like yarn, seaming techniques, and knitting machine experiences. The remainder of the day blends independent knitting and informal classes. Optional classes include two pathways. The Basic Beginner option features projects such as a textured cowl, stocking hat, tuck stitch dishcloth, Picot-Edge socks, and a Sideways Knit Sweater. The Camp Project option focuses on a child size drop shoulder sweater with a hem edge trim and ribbed neck and sleeves, designed as a practice piece so participants can later make one in a custom size. Knitters are also welcome to work on their own projects. Knitting Machine Mentors may be available for extra help on a limited, as-available basis, and there may be waiting times when many participants need assistance. Because the event takes place inside the Knitshop, attendees are asked to limit extra items. Some participants will work next to yarn shelves, creating an immersive environment surrounded by fibers that include both natural wool and man-made options. Passap machine owners and Circular Sock Machine owners should confirm space and project availability in advance, and attendance for these machines may be limited. Registration is very limited. The cost includes classes, instruction, a project and pattern packet to take home, a copy of Machine Knitting Inspiration, and access to special yarn sales available only to camp attendees.
