Darts for Hearts - Summer 2026

Darts for Hearts returns for its second annual summer gathering at Bud’s Tavern, organized by the Lange family in honor of their heart warrior Joseph and run by Mike Jones. The event raises funds so Duke Hospital can continue supporting future heart warriors with comforting WubbaNub pacifier and teddy bear companions. The centerpiece is a Luck of the Draw darts tournament. Entry is $15, with $5 benefiting Darts for Hearts and $10 going to a payout pool awarded to the top three teams. A Triple Shot side game invites players to throw all three darts at a designated triple. Half of the pot supports Darts for Hearts and the other half is split into three equal shares based on successful hits. If a drawn player lands two darts on the triple, that player receives two of the three shares, and names continue to be drawn until all shares are claimed. For example, if the pot reaches $50, each dart would be worth $15, with the remaining $5 automatically donated to the cause. Additional ways to play and give include a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction featuring donated items, with contributions coordinated through Kayce and a full item list to be shared closer to the event. Players in the Luck of the Draw will be treated to a complimentary buffet from Bud’s Tavern. A donation jar will be available for anyone who would like to say thanks, and RSVPs are appreciated to help with the headcount.

Franklin County Amateur Radio Club Field Day

Franklin County Amateur Radio Club Field Day brings local amateur radio operators together for a hands-on communications exercise that is part picnic, part campout, part emergency preparedness drill, and part friendly contest. As part of the annual ARRL Field Day observed across the United States and Canada on the fourth weekend in June, thousands of participants operate from temporary or remote setups with clubs, schools, and friends. At a typical site, visitors can see a range of amateur radio activities and learn about the many ways radio serves the community. Many groups use the day to test their readiness for providing emergency communications, a role hams have filled repeatedly during and after disasters when other systems are unavailable. The event also offers a practical introduction to STEM for students and new enthusiasts. Those who enjoy competition aim to log as many contacts as possible while learning to run equipment in challenging conditions, building skills that also support large organized events such as marathons, bike rides, walkathons, parades, and exhibits at public venues.

An Evening with Stuart McLamb & Sean Thomas Gerard

The Wake Forest Listening Room hosts an intimate night of songcraft with Stuart McLamb and Sean Thomas Gerard. Stuart McLamb, the North Carolina writer behind The Love Language, built a critically praised catalog across four Merge Records releases that carried him to major stages like Coachella, sharing bills with Phoenix, Arcade Fire and Teenage Fanclub. His songs draw on classic pop, folk and indie roots, pairing a rich analog feel with heartfelt, often nostalgic storytelling, and he favors a close, honest delivery where the song stays at the center. He also records as Fancy Gap with Charles Crossingham, working alongside artists such as Sharon Van Etten, Adam Lazzara and Rami Jaffee. Pittsburgh-born and now based in Wilmington, North Carolina, Sean Thomas Gerard first led Onward, Soldiers, releasing two albums on Winoca Records and the EP Daydreamer. His work has appeared on One Tree Hill, he has performed at CMJ, SXSW, 35 Denton and Hopscotch, his song Let the Time Roll By was included on Vagrant Records' Gasoline Rainbows, and appearances include Nashville's Music City Roots and PBS's Sun Sessions from Sun Studio in Memphis. Solo, he pares the arrangements back to spotlight melody, craft and a dynamic voice that can be tender or explosive. His solo recordings include Great Unknown in 2015, While We're in the Blue in 2017, Finally Found a Paradise in 2021 on Fort Lowell Records, and Stay In Your Light in 2026 on Fort Lowell Records.

OM Chanting Meditation with Kelly Rye

This session focuses on Bhramari Pranayama, also known as humming or OM (AUM) chanting, with attention to sensing vibration and resonance throughout the body rather than simply saying the word. No prior experience is required. The class welcomes ages 12 and up, with anyone under 18 accompanied by an adult and remaining quiet and respectful. The objective is a nervous system reset, relaxation, happiness, energy, increased immune function, improved sleep and concentration, mental clarity, self-actualization, and overall mental and emotional wellness. Author Event: Eliza Knight

Author Eliza Knight appears in conversation with Katherine Scott Crawford to celebrate Knight’s new novel, Lost in the Summer of '69. The story centers on Eleanor Bell, a widowed would-be singer who, after an early Alzheimer’s diagnosis just before her sixty-ninth birthday, sets off on a music-filled bucket-list tour of summer festivals without telling anyone. Her daughter, Leanne Miller, and granddaughter, Nora, take to the road in a Lincoln Continental to find her, tracing a cross-country path from Atlanta to California, Denver, Seattle, back to New York, and then New Orleans. Along the way they hear Eleanor’s voice on the radio, and Johnny Carson even nicknames her the Dame of Rock n’ Roll. Eliza Knight is an award-winning USA Today and international bestselling author of historical women’s fiction. Her love of history began in childhood at Versailles, and she has written numerous novels, including Confessions of Grammar Queen, The Mayfair Bookshop, Starring Adele Astaire, Ribbons of Scarlet, A Day of Fire, and Can’t We Be Friends. Katherine Scott Crawford is the award-winning author of The Miniaturist’s Assistant and Keowee Valley. A former backpacking guide, adjunct professor, and recovering academic, she wrote a weekly newspaper column that appeared across the United States and abroad, with work in outlets such as USA Today, the Detroit Free Press, and the Herald Scotland. Winner of the 2025 Sir Walter Raleigh Award in fiction from the state of North Carolina, she holds an MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts, prefers time in the woods with her dog, enjoys curious people, adventure, and snow, and believes historical fiction is the best way to time travel. An eleventh-generation Southerner, she leads writing retreats at a remote mountain lodge in Western North Carolina, where she lives with her family.

Reconnect To Your True Self: Using Somatic and Behavioral Therapy skills and Human Design

⭐ Ebru Water‑Marbling Bauble Workshop: CHRISTMAS IN JULY

MK Creative Arts Studio hosts a Christmas in July edition of its hands-on Ebru water marbling workshop focused on creating ornament baubles. After a sold out debut last year, this experience returns with an opportunity to craft swirling, marbled designs that are transferred from a pigment bath onto your baubles, resulting in pieces that are truly one of a kind. Ebru is a traditional Turkish technique where colorful pigments float on a thickened surface, then are gently shaped into patterns such as ripples, stones, or florals before being lifted onto an object. Participants will receive materials and guidance to produce vivid, floating-ink ornaments that capture movement and color in every piece. While the baubles dry, guests can enjoy seasonal treats that bring the holiday spirit to midsummer, including cold apple cider, mini gingerbread cookies, peppermint bark bites, shortbread, cranberry spritzers, and a Christmas themed snack mix, with a cheerful holiday playlist adding to the atmosphere. A standard ticket is $49 and covers one participant, two marbled baubles, all necessary materials, step-by-step instruction, and access to a drying and packaging station. A premium ticket is $89 and includes one participant, a set of six marbled baubles, priority access to colors, additional time at the marbling tray, and upgraded packaging, which works well for gift sets or collectors. Extra baubles may be added for $10 each during checkout or at the event. Open to ages 12 and up who can participate independently. All sales are final and refunds are not offered. Full terms are provided at checkout. The organizer may reschedule in cases such as low enrollment, weather, illness, or other unforeseen circumstances. Optional ticket insurance is available during checkout for added flexibility.
