Before astronauts Alan Shepard and John Glenn launched, Able, Baker, Ham, and Enos flew as research subjects to advance space medicine and to confirm that people could safely travel beyond Earth. The talk also considers how these animals are remembered in books, films, and museum exhibits around the country. John Lynch is a professor in the University of Cincinnati’s School of Communication, Film, and Media Studies, a 2026 to 2027 fellow with the Niehoff Center for Film and Media Studies, an affiliate of UC’s Center for the Public Engagement with Science, a consultant for the Smithsonian Science Center’s Biotechnology education guide, and a member of the Smithsonian Science Education Center’s inaugural Science Ambassador cohort. An award-winning author and editor of four books and more than 60 articles, he focuses on how medical, scientific, and technical information is communicated and the ethical questions that follow from it. His book What are Stem Cells? Definition at the Intersection of Science and Politics received the National Communication Association’s Health Communication Distinguished Book Award in 2016, and Origins of Bioethics: Remembering When Medicine Went Wrong earned the Association for the Rhetoric of Science and Technology Book of the Year Award in 2020. Spend a day supporting public history in Greenhills, a New Deal era Greenbelt community, by caring for memorial benches and preserving local stories. The morning focuses on hands-on work scraping, sanding, and painting wooden benches throughout Greenhills. After a complimentary lunch, participants will draw on resources from the GHS Museum and Archives, the Greenhills High School Alumni Room, and the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library to research the individuals commemorated on the benches, creating short writeups to accompany the newly refreshed seating. Participation is free, and registration is required as partner organizations are counting on firm commitments. Meet at the lower level entrance of Clifton Court Hall at the University of Cincinnati. Depending on the season, tasks may include compost bagging and winter cleanup, nursery work such as potting herbs and flowers, berry planting, site preparation, mulching and general maintenance, cover crop and flower harvest, summer cleanup, preparing the tree nursery for future orchard installations, chicken care along with mulching beds, and fall cleanup with winter prep. Light refreshments and water will be available. Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes suitable for outdoor work, and keep in mind that the ground may be uneven as the farm continues to develop. Painter Mary Jane Ward leads a one day outdoor, plein air painting workshop focused on capturing the colors and shifting light of spring. On the grounds of Scioto Audubon Park, participants practice painting from life while learning to work quickly, simplify complex scenes, and mix balanced color palettes.

Tackle a cross country 5k on the trails of Grant Park, with parking available at Watts Middle School. All participants must check in before the start, pick up an assigned timing chip at the table with the green tablecloth, and attach it to one shoe. Additional awards will recognize top finishers in the following age groups, with 9 and under non competitive and all finishers acknowledged, then 10 to 14, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 and up. For safety and insurance reasons, animals are not allowed at ORRRC events, except for clearly identified service dogs. A public stargazing session will take place in the parking area just beyond the JBSP playground and before the Day Lodge. Look for posted signs and MVAS volunteers helping direct traffic as you enter the park. MVAS members will have telescopes and binoculars available for viewing, so there is no need to bring your own equipment. Curiosity and questions are encouraged. When approaching the observing area, keep your vehicle headlights on low beam. Park in the lots around the Day Lodge by taking the left fork at the lodge, then walk back to the viewing site. To preserve night vision and protect equipment, use only red light sources while moving around the area and avoid white light from flashlights or phones. Pets are not allowed within the viewing zone. Attendance is free and open to park visitors, and donations are appreciated. The event depends on weather conditions. If a cancellation is necessary, a notice will be posted on the organizers’ Facebook page, and if no notice appears it will proceed as planned.

Suzy Bogguss appears at Keepin’ It Country Farm in Waynesville, Ohio, with the Richard Lynch Band also performing. Paris Paloma brings The Fatal Flaw Tour to KEMBA Live for an indoor, all-ages concert. This partnership with Amber Rose begins a series of small group investigations at the restaurant. During initial walkthroughs, activity was documented that included clear EVPs, distinct footsteps from above when the space was empty, audible voices, and photos of interest. Few groups have been permitted to investigate here, making access to the location’s haunted history uncommon. The evening starts with food and a walkthrough of the building, then after closing the investigation begins using a variety of tools and methods to seek responses. Guests may stay with the group or explore on their own. All sales are final and there are no refunds.
