The American Institute of Floral Designers Northwest Chapter presents a friendly floral design competition at Swan Island Dahlias, celebrating a century of blooms, creativity, and artistry. The event welcomes everyone, including professionals, students, hobbyists, newcomers, and enthusiasts, and AIFD membership is not required. Participants will create a tabletop floral composition inspired by the theme “Petals of the Past ~ Blooms of the Future,” interpreting the Swan Island Dahlias focus with creativity, innovation, and storytelling. Designs must fit within a maximum of three feet in width, height, and depth. Structures may be built at home in advance. At least 60 percent of each piece must feature dahlias. An assortment of fifty dahlias along with greens and alternative materials will be available on site. Please bring your own tools, and sustainable mechanics are encouraged. Two divisions are offered. The beginner division is for first-time competitors, and the advanced division is for those with prior competition experience and an understanding of AIFD elements and principles of design. Entries will be evaluated on theme development, balance and proportion, line, rhythm and form, harmony and unity, color and texture, focal area, technical execution, and originality with overall aesthetic impact. Awards include a top prize, a runner up, a People’s Pick, and the Swan Island Best in Show. Entry fees are 50 dollars for beginners and 75 dollars for advanced participants. Proceeds support scholarships and floral education programs organized by the Northwest AIFD Chapter. Registration is nonrefundable, and entries that exceed size limits or fail to meet the 60 percent dahlia requirement will be disqualified.

Offerings can vary, so to confirm whether a specific item can be handled, email sustainability@clackamas.us with a brief description, as the page may not be monitored consistently. To keep wait times reasonable, only one broken item per person is examined at a time. After each assessment or repair, return to the registration table to be paired with another fixer. If a repair appears likely to take longer than about 30 minutes, it may be postponed. Certain items are not accepted, including anything too heavy for one person to carry, microwaves, printers, DVD players, VCRs, televisions, computers, laptops, tablets, cell phones, large appliances, items containing coolant, gasoline, or other hazardous materials, and unwashed clothing. Oregon Mini Society maps an eight day caravan from MINI of Portland to Monterey for the MINI TAKES THE STATES 20th Anniversary Road Trip, celebrating coastal highways, towering redwoods, wine country, mountain passes, and plenty of MINI camaraderie. The route follows the Oregon coast to Bandon with stops in Lincoln City, Newport, and Florence, continues into California through Gold Beach, Crescent City, and Eureka to an overnight in Garberville with a drive along the Avenue of the Giants, then heads to Novato with seaside breaks in Fort Bragg and Point Arena and a classic drive through a redwood tree. Next comes a San Francisco swing with photo opportunities at the Golden Gate Bridge, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Lombard Street, lunch in Half Moon Bay at Cameron’s Pub and Restaurant, a visit to Britannia Arms of Capitola, and an overnight in Seaside. With the official MINI TAKES THE STATES activities underway, the group rallies in Monterey and points toward Sonoma with an evening at SOMO Village Event Center, then travels from Sonoma to Lake Tahoe for an evening at Palisades Tahoe. The farewell rally departs Lake Tahoe and winds via Reno and Susanville to Mt. Shasta, with the final leg returning north on I-5. Participants gather at MINI of Portland for a scenic backroads drive to The Plumper Pumpkin Patch & Tree Farm, a family run working farm on 65 acres with rolling hills and views of the Willamette Valley. At the patch, launch pumpkins from an air cannon or take aim with the apple cannon at field targets, wander corn mazes for both adults and kids, zoom down a farm slide, try pumpkin bowling, enjoy pony rides, cheer on pig races, hop on a hayride, and meet friendly farm animals. Admission pricing is still to be determined. Cannon activities are priced at $5 per pumpkin shot and $5 for five apples. Learn practical pressure canning for meat and poultry in a hands-on class that makes meal planning easier with shelf-stable options. Participants gain the science and skills to safely preserve low-acid foods using research-based methods. The class covers essential equipment and reliable recipe resources, and includes a take-home jar of canned chicken made during the class. Examples of what pressure canning can preserve include chicken, meat, broth, and seafood such as tuna and salmon. The fee is $30 per person, or $50 for two people sharing take-home resources.

A free community repair gathering at Clackamas Community College invites community members to troubleshoot and, when possible, fix household items with the help of volunteer fixers. It is a friendly way to learn repair skills, save money, and keep usable items out of the trash. The exact location on campus will be announced, and directional signs will be posted the day of the event. Attendees may bring clean clothing and other textiles, small electronics, and small home appliances. Availability of certain repairs can vary, and questions about specific items can be sent to sustainability@clackamas.us. To help reduce wait times, one broken item per person is examined at a time. After an item is assessed or repaired, return to the registration table to be matched with another volunteer. If a repair is taking longer than about 30 minutes, it may be postponed. Items not accepted include anything too heavy for one person to carry, microwaves, printers, DVD players, VCRs, TVs, computers, laptops, tablets, cellphones, large appliances, appliances containing coolant or gasoline or other hazardous materials, and unwashed clothing. Upon arrival, sign in at the front desk and complete a liability waiver. Items may be placed on a hold table for review, and volunteers will take projects based on order of arrival and their particular skills, which can result in slight adjustments to the order. Depending on turnout, plan to wait with your item, since leaving it may cause you to lose your place. A successful repair cannot be guaranteed, but every effort will be made to help.

Oregon Mini Society hosts a scenic backroads tour in support of the 92nd Annual Verboort Sausage & Kraut Festival, a one-day Dutch-inspired celebration that benefits the local Catholic community and school in Verboort with help from over 850 volunteers. The day includes the monthly OMS club meeting featuring a Zoom session with Chris Dawson of England, who collaborated with John Cooper, followed by a drive through picturesque routes to Forest Grove for the festivities. Upon arrival, participants can use the drive-thru to pick up sausage and kraut to go, or park to browse the Dutch Bazaar and sit down for a meal. Highlights include sausage and kraut served indoors or packaged to take away, a market of handmade holiday decor such as quilts, blankets, and potholders, fresh-baked treats and jars of jam, bingo for all ages, a beer garden showing college football on a large screen, festival merchandise, and more. Registration will be available through OMS WildApricot. Participation is limited to Oregon Mini Society members.
