Volunteers will add serviceberry, juniper, ostrich fern, and other native trees, shrubs, and ferns where invasive mugwort and knotweed were removed, benefiting birds, pollinators, and other wildlife while stabilizing soils, managing stormwater, and strengthening the river corridor. No experience is required. Tools, materials, gloves, and snacks are provided, and staff offer guidance throughout the day. Participants may bring a bike for a short ride along the Greenway to the planting area. Set in the Burlingame State Park Picnic Area, this trail race offers 4 mile and 8 mile options on mostly dirt paths with some stretches of dirt and asphalt road. Check in and bib pick up are available on site, with registration inside the cabin, and parking in the DEM picnic area lot. To help spread out the field, both routes begin with just under a mile along Sanctuary Road, a low traffic dead end dirt road. From there, the 8 mile course turns right and follows single track counterclockwise around Watchaug Pond before returning to the picnic area lot. The 4 mile course continues straight into the DEM owned Kimball Preserve, makes a loop through the Burlingame State Park campground, and heads back to the same start and finish via Sanctuary Road. The 8 mile distance has a two hour cutoff, equal to a 15 minute per mile pace. After that point, support, official timing, and post race food may not be available, so plan accordingly. Walkers are welcome and are asked to select the shorter 4 mile course. Strollers and dogs are not permitted on the course. Hot soup, food, and cider are served after the finish for all participants. For safety, every participant and volunteer must wear at least 200 square inches of orange in accordance with a State of Rhode Island DEM mandate, and anyone not meeting this requirement will not be allowed to race. Awards are presented in both distances to the top male and female overall, plus first place in male and female age groups. For the 8 mile race, age groups are 13 and under, 14 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 plus. For the 4 mile race, age groups are 19 and under, 20 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, 70 to 79, and 80 plus. Entry fees vary by registration period, ranging from 30 to 42 dollars for adults and 25 to 37 dollars for ages 18 and under. Hosted by the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council in partnership with 15 Minute Field Trips, this final walk of the season blends hands-on nature learning, creative crafting, and play while highlighting the wildlife and habitats in the community. The outing begins at the Manton Pond site on the Woonasquatucket River Greenway, an area featuring a Native Plant Garden, the Manton Outdoor Classroom, the Manton Fishway, and visible examples of stormwater management and streambank restoration that WRWC has revitalized as an educational and recreational hub. Limited parking is available at the Manton Outdoor Classroom, including accessible spaces, with additional parking farther along the road. Open to all ages, the walk moves at an easy, exploratory pace and is typically about a mile. The path is paved and wheelchair accessible, but it is not plowed or salted in winter. There are no on-site restrooms or water. The program is primarily in English. Participants are welcome to share photos from any Greenway Wild Walk. Greenway Wild Walks are presented by WRWC with 15 Minute Field Trips to connect people of all ages with nearby nature and to encourage curiosity, environmental stewardship, and exploration close to home.
