USAPL High School Showdown

The USA Powerlifting High School Showdown brings top Texas high school lifters together for an invitational competition run under raw standards. This year includes an open invitation for all state champions. Entry is limited to 40 girls and 40 boys, so spots are not guaranteed across divisions and weight classes. If capacity remains, additional wild card invitations may be offered to other standout lifters in the state who express interest, with an interest form available on the meet webpage. If the roster fills, the field will be divided into lightweight and heavyweight groups. At least $3,000 in TSS gift certificates will be awarded. But when the clock strikes midnight, they shake things up a bit. The Midnight Set is where you’ll experience jazz in a more free and unfiltered form. This isn’t your usual sit-down dinner show. No food, just great drinks, great company, and the kind of jazz that can only happen after hours. Gypsy Jazz by candlelight will be performed by The Jordan Corney Trio. Him & Her Acoustic Harmonica Jam

Enjoy a relaxed, hands-on harmonica workshop followed by an acoustic jam at Midtown Meetup Neighborhood Hangout, led by the bluesy, jazzy, folksy duo Him & Her. Bring a harmonica. The focus is Timing and Being Tasty. Begin by exploring how to play harp with a singer alongside Brenda Freed, then keep the music flowing with a jam guided by Michael D’Eath (DEE-uth) and Brenda. Michael is a former president of SPAH, the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica, and the duo has refined their facilitation at Kerrville Festival shows and harmonica workshops. Brenda’s journey included a 9,000-mile bicycle trek from Iowa to Texas, where discovering the Kerrville Folk Festival launched her singer-songwriter career. She released four solo albums and toured the Midwest, England and Ireland before teaming up with Michael in 2001 to form Texas Hot Flash, which performed throughout Central Texas, Southern California and the Midwest, opening for the Charlie Daniels Band. Him & Her plays primarily original music, with Brenda on vocals, guitar and piano, and Michael on diatonic and chromatic harmonica. They are currently promoting their third album, "Him & Her Do Texas Women." There is no cover.

Tommy Davidson at the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club

Tommy Davidson brings his quick wit and many talents to the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club San Antonio for a night of stand-up that draws on a remarkable career. He rose from Washington, DC comedy rooms to national attention, opening for major touring artists like Patti LaBelle, Kenny G, and Luther Vandross. After moving to Hollywood he performed at the Comedy Act Theatre, connected with Robert Townsend for Partners in Crime, and soon joined the cast of the trailblazing sketch series In Living Color with Jamie Foxx, Jim Carrey, and Damon Wayans. On the big screen, he debuted opposite Halle Berry in Strictly Business, earned praise in Spike Lee’s Bamboozled as Womack and Sleep ’N Eats, appeared in Juwanna Mann, and made a memorable cameo in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. His spot-on impressions of icons such as Sammy Davis Jr. and Michael Jackson, three Showtime specials including On Strength of New York, Illin’ in Philly, and Takin’ it to DC, and a leading voice role in Disney’s The Proud Family highlight his range. Davidson has also hosted on FOX’s The NFL Show with Michael Irvin and Tony Siragusa, appeared in the documentary I Am Comic alongside a roster of well-known comedians, and starred in Black Dynamite with Michael Jai White, which later became an Adult Swim animated series. Known for combining sharp stand-up, character work, and musical flair, he tours internationally and leaves audiences laughing long after the show ends.
