Set out on a gentle creek float with a fossil hunt twist. This ticketed outing invites ages 6 and up, with an easy pace that suits kids, first timers, and novices. Glide by shaded banks under a leafy canopy, breathe in the scent of wildflowers, and listen for birds as you move through a waterway connected to an ancient sea. Fossil shark teeth and other remnants rest in the sediment, and the thrill comes from spotting and sifting for these small pieces of deep history. Expect calm water about 3 to 4 feet deep, a low and slow route where the group may travel a mile or less, and plenty of time to explore. Paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes are welcome. Launch is from a gentle grassy slope about 100 yards from roadside parking with no fee. Ice cold water is provided, and the paddle is narrated. Participants using their own gear are free to remain on the water for as long as they wish throughout the day. For the search, bring a kitchen colander and a small garden spade. The session runs long to allow for detailed work on these small pieces. Finished shelves measure about 6 3/4 by 4 1/2 inches, and individual trinkets range from roughly 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches. Beverages are welcome, but food cannot be consumed while working with clay. The SEF Arts Fest 5K and 1K Run features a quick, level 5K open to both timed and non timed participants, plus the Bubble K Fun Run that wraps up with a lively bubble foam celebration. A Sleepin In virtual option is available for those who prefer to take part remotely. Proceeds support the Sherman Education Foundation’s work for Sherman ISD students and teachers. Since 1999, SEF has raised more than $3 million to enhance both innovative learning opportunities and enrichment programs alongside core classroom resources. The 5K route begins at Rusk and Laurel, heads to King, turns right on Travis, continues to Lake and past a water station, goes one block to Crockett, then returns to King and back to Rusk for the finish. The Bubble K follows a shorter loop that starts and ends at the same location. Cash prizes are awarded to the first overall male and female finishers, as well as the top Masters 40+, Grand Masters 50+, and Grandest Grand Masters 60+ runners, with medals for cash award winners. The Sherman Evening Lions Club hosts its eighth annual chili cook-off at the 903 Brewers Tap Room in Sherman, offering a family friendly day that begins with a special breakfast menu from 903 Brewers and continues with activities for all ages. The main chili competition follows official Tolbert rules and is sanctioned by the Original Terlingua International Championship Chili Cookoff. Cooking is open to the public, with local cooks competing alongside Tolbert cooks for recognition and awards, or choosing to enter only the People’s Choice category. In People’s Choice, anyone may cook, the public serves as judges, and a $10 donation provides tasting access to entries in that category along with one vote. People’s Choice cooks should prepare 5 pounds of chili to supply samples. A new Rookie Cook-Off welcomes first-time competitors who have not previously entered a Tolbert or CASI sanctioned event. Rookie entrants take part in the main Tolbert competition and are also considered for separate Rookie awards honoring first, second, and third place. The entry fee for all competitors is $35. Awards will be presented for the Tolbert competition, People’s Choice, and the Rookie Cook-Off. Extra highlights include a 50/50 raffle that splits the pot between the drawing winner and the Lions Club, a silent auction, and live music provided by 903 Brewers. Proceeds from the cook-off, raffle, and silent auction support Lions Charities across the Sherman-Denison and Grayson County area, benefiting groups such as DAWG, Family Promise of Grayson County, Texoma Family Shelter, Boys and Girls Club, and Divine Equine, as well as funding vision services for adults in Grayson County, diabetes supplies, and educational services for SISD.
