Fix It Day Jewelry & Clothing Mending Repairs Done By 16th Generation Silversmith Rene & wife Jenny

Fix It Day brings together hands-on jewelry repair and clothing mending with work performed by 16th generation silversmith Rene Venegas and his wife, Jenny. Visitors can bring silver, gold, brass, or copper pieces, including rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and even home decor items, for services such as replacing missing stones, restringing beads and pearls, resizing rings, tightening prongs, and, when possible, recreating a single earring to complete a pair. Jenny focuses on garment care with practical fixes that include darning socks, patching pants and jeans, sewing on buttons, and other basic mending needs. Conversations with the artists are welcome, and they can explain how they or other makers might help with specific projects. Pricing depends on the scope of the work. Some repairs can be finished on the spot, while others may require a few days. Drop-off is available, and the jeweler will follow up with estimates and options. No advance registration is required, and appointments can be arranged outside regular repair times. Rene’s background spans centuries of family tradition. His ancestors were among the earliest arrivals from Spain to the Americas, and Felipe Venegas served as a cathedral silversmith in the Dominican Republic and stamped the first European coins in the New World. Rene learned the craft as a child in his father’s silver shop in Bogota, Colombia, and has taught jewelry and silversmithing at Weber State for 15 years. His work and teaching have been featured by The Standard Examiner, The Signpost, KUTV Inside the Story, FOX13 Good Morning Utah, The Salt Project, and KTVX Good Things Utah. Jenny’s creative path is rooted in the domestic arts, from sewing and quilting to embroidery and canning. Through her brand, Aunt GG’s, inspired by Great-Aunts Grace and Glady, she creates comforting handmade pieces for the kitchen, home, and patio.

Participants explore essential jewelry techniques, get comfortable with a range of tools and materials, and create items such as necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and rings. All experience levels are welcome. The series is designed for ongoing learning as skills progress, and it also works as a single-session experience. One-time projects can include a silver band or ring, a ring with a cabochon stone, a simple earring design, a copper or silver bracelet with or without a cabochon, or a simple pendant with or without a cabochon. Registration covers the class and use of studio tools and equipment. Metals and stones are not included and may be brought from home or purchased at the store. Each two-hour session is $40, or choose a three-class punch pass for $100. Class size is kept to about four to five people to allow for plenty of one on one instruction. The class is geared toward adults and also welcomes mature teens and pre-teens. Sessions take place at The Local Artisan Collective in downtown Ogden. Payment is accepted in person or online, and private classes and parties are available. For the three-class option, pay for the current session and the remaining two classes are prorated during class.
