    Red Drum Classic

Sand Bridge Beach, 3820 Sandpiper Rd, Virginia Beach
    See details

The Red Drum Classic brings anglers to Sand Bridge Beach for a public, photo-based fishing tournament run through the FishDonkey mobile app. Registration takes place online, with entry fees of $40 for adults and $20 for youth under 16, paid by debit or credit card. After registering, participants receive an email to complete tournament setup in the app and must register under VBAC Red Drum Classic. All catches are submitted through FishDonkey, and scoring is based on length within the appropriate division and category. Anglers supply their own measuring device and include the whole fish in each photo, with the nose at zero and the tail aligned on visible inch markings. Judges may disqualify any entry if the length cannot be determined. Eligible species include Red Drum, Bluefish, and Sea Mullet. Participants provide all equipment, bait, and tackle, hold the necessary licenses and permits, and follow all fishing regulations, size limits, and published VBAC rules. Anglers are responsible for regulations related to access at Little Island State Park, Back Bay Wildlife Refuge, and False Cape State Park. The event is scored individually. Up to three lines may be in the water at once. Float rigs, balloons, plastic bags, cast nets, and any chumming are prohibited. Only two hooks are allowed on one line, with exceptions for two double hooked rigs and artificial lures as specified by the manufacturer. All qualifying fish must be caught on hook or lure and landed on the beach by the angler. No lines may be in the water before the start, and all lines must be in at the stop. A fish hooked before the end qualifies if it is landed. Fishing takes place within the boundaries marked by the Dam Neck Base fence to the north and the North Carolina state line fence to the south. Anglers who cannot physically cast may designate a caster in writing before fishing begins. Award categories without a scoring fish will not be issued. All participants assume all risks and agree not to hold the Virginia Beach Anglers Club liable. Prizes are awarded by length, with a maximum of one prize category per angler and all judges’ decisions final. Adult Men’s Red Drum awards are $350 for first place, $150 for second, and $50 for third. Adult Women’s Red Drum awards are $350 for first place, $150 for second, and $50 for third. Youth Red Drum awards are $100 for first, $50 for second, and a $25 gift certificate for third. The Largest Bluefish category across Adult and Youth awards $100 for first place and $50 for second, and the Largest Sea Mullet category across Adult and Youth awards $100 for first place.

For over 15 years, the organization has advanced its mission through education, mentorship, mental health supports, and community engagement. The theme, Possibility Because, highlights how educators help young people move beyond challenges toward their potential, creating pathways to stronger communities and brighter futures. Honorees are recognized for leadership in early childhood and K to 12 education, youth development and mentorship, family and community engagement, and educational advocacy and systems change. This year’s honorees include Dr. Peggy Britt, Deborah Zearfoss Davis, Mona Gunn, Vanessa Hinton, Dr. Joseph Knight, Regina Southall, Dr. Rosalyn Sanderlin, Dr. Marie Shepherd, Lindell Wallace, and Dr. Ella Ward. The evening features live entertainment with a DJ, a red carpet experience, a curated fine dining menu, signature cocktails with a complementary tea and juice bar, an interactive photo booth, an exclusive silent auction, and opportunities to connect with community leaders and changemakers. A VIP offering includes a pre-gala happy hour, a celebrity meet and greet, and an after party. The dress code is Whimsical Elegance, inviting polished looks with playful color and texture, such as jewel tones and iridescent hues, ethereal fabrics, dramatic silhouettes, creative black-tie interpretations, tasteful sparkle, floral accents, and refined ensembles that express individuality. The celebration affirms hope beyond the storm and the belief that every child deserves opportunity, support, healing, and a brighter future.

At Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band brings a milestone celebration of Ledbetter Heights. Three decades after a teenage guitarist from Shreveport helped push the blues back into the spotlight, he returns to the album that launched him. The show features the entire 12-song Ledbetter Heights performed live, followed by a second set drawn from highlights across his 30-year catalog. Recently, Shepherd revisited his debut in the studio with producer Jerry Harrison, capturing the spirit of the original while revealing more seasoned arrangements and touch, with Riverside recast at a slower, smokier burn. His path from club stages to major charts led to Gold and Platinum releases, multiple Grammy nominations, and honors from Billboard and the Blues Music Awards, along with tours alongside iconic rock and blues artists. Drummer Chris "Whipper" Layton, a longtime collaborator from the original era, contributed to the new recording, underscoring the deep roots behind this music. This concert spotlights the fire and songcraft of Ledbetter Heights and traces the wide arc of Shepherd’s evolving blues-rock sound.

Bridging the Gap to Mental Health: You Don’t Have to Fight Alone

Portsmouth Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics Union, 3704 Winchester Dr, Portsmouth
    See details

At Portsmouth Professional Fire Fighters & Paramedics Union, a community-driven mental health fair returns for its second installment organized by Mingle In 757, dedicating the day to wellbeing, learning, healing, and connection. Recognizing that many people shoulder unseen struggles behind everyday routines and responsibilities, the focus centers on the idea that no one has to face these challenges alone. The program brings together guest speakers, resource providers, candid dialogue, and hands-on activities that foster resilience, support emotional health, and emphasize the strength of community care. The environment is designed to be welcoming and safe so participants feel recognized, listened to, and encouraged. This gathering supports people managing their own mental health, those standing by loved ones, anyone seeking information or services, individuals curious about wellness, and community members who value meaningful connection. The purpose is to open conversation, reduce stigma, and link attendees with practical, accessible support for mind, body, and spirit. Organizers are also accepting interest from volunteers, wellness vendors, mental health professionals, vendors offering nutritious food, and community partners. Sponsorships help provide bags of helpful materials, wellbeing offerings, and no-cost entry for the community, while highlighting businesses that champion mental health awareness.

Master Gardener Plant Pot Collection & Mobile Help Desk at KSB Recycling Drive

    800 Carolina Rd, Suffolk
    See details

Suffolk Master Gardeners will host a collection of clean, black plastic plant pots in good condition, putting them back to work in local projects such as propagation efforts, the plant sale, and a pollinator day plant giveaway. The aim is to keep usable containers out of the landfill, so please stack donations neatly before dropping them off. Accepted items include clean gallon or quart black plastic pots, along with smaller pots, seed-starting trays, and flats that are also clean and intact. Items that cannot be accepted include containers caked in mud, pots filled with wet leaves, any pots with ant or spider infestations, and broken or torn pieces. Because this effort is volunteer-run and there is no way to transport, store, or dispose of unsuitable items, please take those elsewhere. A gardening help desk will be available to answer questions and to share information about how to volunteer as a Suffolk Master Gardener. Plans may change due to weather, site requirements, or other factors. Virginia Cooperative Extension, a partnership of Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and local governments, is an equal opportunity employer. If you are a person with a disability and need assistance or accommodation, contact Andrea Slye, VCE City of Suffolk, at 757-514-4337 during business hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. TDD number is 800-828-1120.
