Mineral Point welcomed Cornish miners in the mid nineteenth century to work the lead mines, growing into a distinctly Cornish settlement that later became a hub for artisans and agriculture. This free public meetup offers a chance to preview the Mines of Spain 100 course ahead of the October race weekend. Runners of all speeds and abilities are welcome to cover as much or as little of the route as they prefer, then gather for a potluck style social at the start and finish area in Louis Murphy Park to refuel, rehydrate, and talk about the big weekend to come. Aid will be available around mile 10.5 at the Cattesse AS#2 location with water, Tailwind, and snacks. If it gets hot, additional water jugs will be placed near Sauk Fox AS#1 around miles 4 and 12. Experienced trail runners familiar with the course will lead pace groups so participants can focus on the trails and the camaraderie of old and new friends. The trails will not be marked like on race day, so sticking with a group or being comfortable exploring is recommended. A GPX file is available to upload to devices, and the route can be followed in real time using a couple of phone apps. Group paces for the full 20ish mile loop are expected to range from roughly 3.5 hours to about 5 hours, with options to shorten the distance as needed. Hot food will be provided after the run. Attendees may bring an appetizer, side, or dessert to share, along with a cooler of favorite beverages.

The film follows John, who left the rural upper Midwest at 18 for a city he had never visited, then decades later, inspired by his ancestors and challenging local norms, removed all turf grass from his urban backyard to create a productive food garden. His journey tracks social, environmental, and economic outcomes, highlighting how these spaces supported earlier generations and how they can help address current challenges. Director Dr. John Zahina-Ramos is a Dubuque native with family roots in the city’s North End. He has researched urban agriculture since 2009, authored an award-winning book, and has been featured in the Palm Beach Post and on the PBS series Victory Garden’s Edible Feast. He serves as Professor and Horticulture Department Chair at the College of Lake County in the Chicago area and also enjoys painting, composing music, blacksmithing, and tending his large backyard food garden.
