    Hummingbird Banding

Public Affairs Office, 3015 Carnahan St, Building 21115, Fort Huachuca, AZ 85613, 3015 Carnahan St, Fort Huachuca
    Free

Volunteer support is welcome for hummingbird banding and monitoring, offering close views of these birds while contributing to a regional biodiversity study spanning the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The work supports the Hummingbird Monitoring Network’s long-term research into hummingbird distribution, migration, and diversity, with findings used to aid conservation and protection. Experience is not required, since training is provided at the start of each session. Volunteers must be U.S. citizens to access Fort Huachuca and be 18 or older, and anyone younger than 18 must come with an adult. Sessions follow strict scientific protocols, and visitors may stop by during banding activities. Each session relies on at least four volunteers, with roles such as recorder, trapper, and feeder and releaser. Recorders need clear handwriting, careful attention to detail when taking spoken data, and basic computer familiarity. Trappers use good timing to drop the trap curtain and gentle handling to move a bird safely into a mesh bag. Feeders and releasers help offer a quick feed and return each bird after processing, which calls for steady hands and confidence with bird handling. There is also an ongoing need for feeder maintenance at the PAO monitoring site, where five feeders are cleaned and refilled twice weekly from early March through early October. Help once a week or every other week is appreciated. For feeder maintenance, contact laura_clawson@yahoo.com. To reserve a volunteer opportunity or get current information on openings, contact Birgit Johnson at kyanve@gmail.com or Laura Clawson at laura_clawson@yahoo.com.
