This weekend in Sierra Vista, AZ

Volunteers are needed to help monitor hummingbirds as part of a regional biodiversity study spanning the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Participants assist with banding and data collection that support the Hummingbird Monitoring Network’s multi-year investigation into distribution, migration, and diversity, with findings used to aid preservation and protection efforts. Training is provided at the start of each session. Volunteers must be U.S. citizens to enter Fort Huachuca and be 18 or older, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a scientific research program that follows mandatory protocols, and visitors are welcome during banding sessions. Each monitoring session requires four or more volunteers. Roles include a recorder with legible handwriting and basic computer skills, a trapper with good hand-eye coordination and the dexterity to safely handle birds, and a feeder and releaser who feeds each bird and releases it after processing. A typical session lasts about 5.75 hours, including equipment set-up, five hours of trapping, and equipment break-down. Additional help is needed with feeder maintenance at the PAO monitoring site.
