Volunteers are needed for hummingbird banding and monitoring at the PAO monitoring site, contributing to the Hummingbird Monitoring Network’s multi-year research across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Participants can view hummingbirds up close while helping collect standardized data on distribution, migration, and diversity that informs conservation and protection efforts. Training is provided at the start of each session, so no prior experience is necessary. Because the site is on Fort Huachuca, volunteers must be U.S. citizens and 18 or older, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. This is a scientific program that follows required protocols, and visitors are welcome during the banding session. Each monitoring session relies on at least four volunteers across key roles. Recorders need clear handwriting, accurate transcription, and basic computer skills. Trappers must have good hand-eye coordination to drop the curtain at the right time and carefully transfer each bird into a mesh bag. A feeder and releaser helps give birds a sip on busy days and releases them after processing, which calls for steady hands and confidence in handling birds. There is also an ongoing need to care for five feeders at the PAO site, which are cleaned and refilled twice a week.
