A career in dialogue and music editing led her into a close-knit Echo Park music community, and a spur-of-the-moment studio visit with producer Gus Seyffert yielded the first take of Solitary Daughter. She went on to craft songs with contributors including Smokey Hormel, and worked with Matthew E. White and Trey Pollard before Thom Monahan brought the recordings together in a polished final mix. Her writing lingers on movement, memory, and belonging, at times folding in vivid sonic souvenirs such as the street sounds from her grandmother’s neighborhood in Aleppo. Each class concentrates on a specific seasonal window from late winter into the dormant period and spotlights the plants that benefit most at that time. Guidance covers flowering on new versus old wood, addressing winter injury, renovation techniques, care of evergreens, structural and aesthetic shaping, and ways to reduce future damage. A clear focus on plant response helps explain when growth is active, when it reacts most strongly, and when cuts have little effect. Sessions take place outdoors in the garden, so dressing for the weather is recommended. Participants walk the landscape, observe seasonal change, and discuss techniques in context for a practical, visual learning experience. Attend one session or combine several for a complete, year-round framework. All experience levels are welcome and class size is limited. Instruction is led by Reed Pugh, a horticulturist with more than 25 years of experience on both coasts, including nursery work, ownership of design, installation, and maintenance firms, management of a 30-acre historic private estate in Brookline, and leadership at a premier New England fine-gardening company. Through his company, Barking Dog Gardens, he teaches one-on-one, emphasizing plant health, seasonal awareness, and long-term beauty while helping gardeners understand plant behavior and the value of well-timed care. On the closing day of Historic New England’s Myth & Memory: Stories of the American Revolution, a musical program traces the lives of everyday people on the home front during the struggle for independence. The trio Ampersand blends rich vocal harmonies with mandolin, bouzouki, hammered dulcimer, and penny whistles while exploring the early stirrings of revolution and the perspectives of colonists from many walks of life. Historian and award-winning educator Michele Gabrielson leads a discussion grounded in Warren’s own words, exploring how she pushed against 18th century expectations for women and became the first female historian of the American Revolution. Often called the Revolution’s muse, Warren wielded poetry and prose to inspire support for independence, and her voice is placed at the heart of the conversation. Gabrielson is a local history teacher and 18th century interpreter, secretary of the Mercy Otis Warren Society, a member of the Authenticity Standards Committee for Minuteman National Historic Park, and coordinator of the Battle Road Guides for the annual reenactment of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. Her teaching has been recognized by the Massachusetts Department of Education, the Massachusetts History Alliance, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Society of the Cincinnati.
