Mark the United States Semiquincentennial with a guided historical walk led by MUSE Winston-Salem that covers roughly 2 miles in about 2 hours and explores 250 years of the Twin City’s story. The route moves through MUSEws’ surrounding neighborhood of bridges and rail beds, former farms and factories, monuments and burial grounds, and overlooks that frame the city’s past and future. Along the way, the tour highlights pivotal moments in the Camel City narrative and introduces notable and often overlooked figures, inviting reflection on what the next generations might bring. The experience concludes inside the museum with a cold drink and a light snack, plus an exclusive early look at a mosaic glass mural that once stood at Smith Reynolds Airport and is now relocated and illuminated at MUSEws. Registration includes the guided walk with historian and MUSEws executive director Dr. Mike Wakeford and a souvenir water bottle to carry along. The route follows mostly even sidewalks with modest elevation changes and partial shade. The tour runs rain or shine, and participants are encouraged to bring water. The guide will use amplification, and registration is limited to help everyone hear and ask questions. A liability waiver is required.

This hands-on 2nd Saturday activity at Winston Square Park Amphitheater invites participants to explore architecture by building a paper stepped pyramid inspired by Daniel Rich’s meticulous painting of The Ziggurat in Sacramento, a contemporary office building modeled on ancient Mesopotamian temples. No prior art experience is required and all supplies are included. The project connects to Rich’s practice of transforming photographs into paintings that consider stories embedded in the built environment, including shifting power structures, failed utopias, and the effects of ideological conflict and natural upheaval. Works by Rich and other North Carolina artists are also on view in the exhibition Unboxed: Art beyond the Museum at NCMA Winston-Salem Downtown. Part of the museum’s long-running 2nd Saturday program, this experience offers accessible, hands-on artmaking for all ages and skill levels, with each month’s project inspired by current exhibitions or events. 2nd Saturday is free to attend.

A donation drive supports the effort, with collection boxes placed around the Triad to receive outgrown items that still have plenty of wear. The Clothes Bin Winston-Salem and Miracles and Blessings present a community backpack drive to help local students start the school year prepared and confident. Families can pick up backpacks with essential school supplies, enjoy complimentary food, and spend time in a setting that is welcoming for all ages. A child needs to be there to receive a backpack and supplies. Items will be given out in the order people arrive and only until the available stock is gone. Contributions are appreciated, such as notebooks, pencils and pens, crayons and markers, folders, personal care items, socks, and other basic necessities. This partnership focuses on supporting families and students as a new school year begins.
