Johnson presents a globe-spanning look at active volcanoes on every continent. He shares field stories and the science behind powerful volcanic processes, covering lava lakes and flowing lava, explosive eruptions, and hazardous debris flows. The talk explains how close-up observations and measurements reveal how volcanoes function. Johnson and his collaborators record earthquakes and infrasound, monitor ground deformation, track thermal and gas output, and fly drones over craters to collect data. As a specialist in expedition-based research, he combines rigorous science with demanding fieldwork. After closing, Overlap transforms into a sober Halloween costume party filled with playful, sea-soaked fun. Sip mocktails, explore an oracle reading, enjoy snacks, snap photos, tip the Sirens, brave a pirate flogging, feel a jolt from the electric eel, and make a little magic. Sea-inspired characters like sirens, zombie pirates, and other spooky ocean creatures are especially welcome, with a prize for the best on-theme costume. All costumes are welcome. A three-time Grammy Award winner with a 54-year career, he approaches this music not as a note-for-note recreation but with the perspective gained over decades. The band features drummer and producer Adam Deitch of Lettuce, keyboardist Larry Goldings, and bassist Oteil Burbridge, known for work with Dead & Co., Tedeschi Trucks, and the Allman Brothers. The set focuses on fan-requested material interpreted by a lineup built to bring these tunes to life.

The Community Center for the Performing Arts presents Seattle-based Polyrhythmics at WOW Hall. This seven-piece ensemble blends funk, soul, psychedelic rock, R&B, and Afrobeat into vibrant, rhythm-forward instrumentals, building a reputation for high-energy shows and inventive songwriting. Formed in 2010, the band marks 16 years of musical exploration highlighted by the 2025 album Life From Below. Their catalog includes a self-titled debut in 2011 along with Octagon in 2015, Caldera in 2017, and Man from the Future in 2020, each pushing their layered, groove-driven sound in new directions. Polyrhythmics have appeared at major festivals and respected venues across the United States and internationally, sharing stages with notable artists while defining a singular presence in modern funk and soul. The music balances danceable rhythms with immersive textures rooted in American funk and soul and enriched by global influences. The lineup features Ben Bloom on guitar, Grant Schroff on drums, Nathan Spicer on keyboards, Jason Gray on bass, Scott Morning on trumpet, Elijah Clark on trombone, and Art Brown on saxophone and flute.

Create festive soaps in a relaxed, hands-on workshop led by Rachael Robson of Wharfedale Soaps. Working with clear melt and pour soap that is free of SLS and SLES, along with essential oils and shimmering micas, participants make nine unique bars. Begin by crafting a wintry landscape in soap using green and white micas to shape trees, snow drifts, snowflakes, or tiny stars, scented with a bright blend of peppermint and lemongrass. Then pour delicate snowflake soaps tinted in sparkling white and silver and fragranced with a comforting Winter Morning blend of cinnamon and pine with notes of vanilla, apple, and clove. Finish with a candy cane design layered in red and white and topped with peppermint-scented pieces. There is time at the end to individually gift wrap each soap for presents or personal treats. Tea, coffee, and cake are included. Please bring an apron, and note the session is not suitable for children under 12. Access to the workshop space requires climbing one flight of stairs. After two years of Thanksgiving community potlucks, this edition introduces a new theme focused entirely on pie. Presented by Overlap, Piesgiving is a shared meal built around both sweet and savory creations, with attendees bringing a pie of any style to contribute. To keep waste to a minimum, guests are encouraged to bring a reusable plate or bowl and their own fork or spoon. The gathering is free to attend, and an RSVP is requested to help with planning. A playful group photo is also planned, styled like a last supper at the table with the array of pies.
