Aphrodite in Pieces

Third Place Books hosts Lauren J. A. Bear at its Seward Park location for a conversation about Aphrodite in Pieces, a lyrical retelling of Greek myth told through the Goddess of Love’s eyes. The event includes a discussion, time for audience questions, and a book signing. It is free to attend, and RSVPs are encouraged for important updates. The novel envisions Aphrodite, two centuries before the common era, asking a traveling sculptor to hear her story and set it in stone as she reveals her greatest victories, painful missteps, the truth behind her kindness and retribution, and a sweeping romance that keeps slipping away. Blending elements of memoir and fantasy, it considers lasting questions about love and beauty. Critics have praised Bear’s elegant prose and layered portrait of Aphrodite, with recognition from Booklist and a starred review from Library Journal. Bear is also the author of Mother of Rome and Medusa’s Sisters. Buying a copy at the event helps support the store’s author series, and signed editions can be arranged through the store for those who cannot attend.

Samantha Boshnack

At the Chapel Performance Space in the Good Shepherd Center, trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Samantha Boshnack presents a renewed staging of her jazz song cycle Uncomfortable Subjects. A thirteen-piece chamber ensemble of notable Seattle players performs the complete work, led by conductor Joshua Kohl of Degenerate Art Ensemble, with Grammy-winning vocalist Johnaye Kendrick of säje featured. This concert comes ahead of a planned studio recording at London Bridge Studio. The project grew from a 2020 exchange between Boshnack, artist and activist Natasha Marin, and Pushcart Prize winning poet Jane Wong. Across the following pandemic years they explored racism, the climate crisis, mental health, fascism, and the strain of creating art while seeking hope and connection in a time of upheaval. Boshnack shaped those conversations into a seven-part suite that first appeared with a thirteen-piece chamber orchestra at the 2024 Earshot Jazz Festival, co-produced with Nonsequitur and the Cornish Music Department. The ensemble features Johnaye Kendrick on voice, Joshua Kohl conducting, Alex Guy and Alina To on violins, Heather Bentley on viola, Erika Fiebig on cello, Carlos Snaider on guitar and percussion, Julian Weisman on bass, Chris Credit on tenor saxophone and bass clarinet, Sarah Bassingthwaighte on flute, Bhavani Kotha on oboe, Greg Campbell on percussion and French horn, and Boshnack on trumpet and as composer. Support for this project includes a grant from 4Culture, with commissioning funds from the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music and Mutual Mentorship for Musicians M³. Admission is pay what you can, with a suggested range of 5 to 20 dollars available in advance or at the door.

Le Youth

Showbox presents Le Youth at Showbox SoDo for a 21 and over event. The Los Angeles based artist centers the night around who are you really?, a 14 track collection shaped by big feelings and a desire to highlight what people hold in common, even when online conversations forget it. The music examines how negativity can spread on the internet when judgments are made without knowing the person behind the screen, while also turning inward as he questions his identity beyond the Le Youth name. It unfolds like both a personal journal and a quiet self check, finding meaning in ordinary moments and reminding listeners that identity forms offstage as well as in the spotlight. The performance invites thoughtful reflection on how we treat one another online and suggests that shared connection can rise above division.

Bluegrass Jam at the Machine House Brewery

A welcoming circle of pickers and listeners gathers for a bluegrass jam at Machine House Brewing in Hillman City. Open to all ages and to players at any level, participants who can hold down basic rhythm can take part comfortably. Tunes are called in a traditional format with a focus on keeping everything within the bluegrass style. Songs from other genres or originals are fine when played like bluegrass, and the host may decline a tune to keep the session friendly and on track. Leading a song is optional, and anyone may sit out numbers that are not familiar. Helpful materials are available, including a Song of the Week with charts and recordings, playlists of previously called tunes, and a running list of past selections with keys and frequency. Knowing the Nashville Number System is useful since many tunes are called by number, and chord charts are welcome as long as they do not get in anyone’s way. There is no cover, and supporting the brewery and staff is appreciated, with buying the host a beer considered good etiquette. The jam is family friendly, under 21 participants are welcome, and dogs are allowed. Machine House does not serve food, but outside food is permitted and food trucks may be arranged when there is interest. Members of the Outlander Progressive Bluegrass Social Club receive one dollar off each drink by showing a current membership card at the bar.

Since then, she has drawn crowds in New York, Los Angeles, London, Toronto, and San Francisco, and has appeared alongside Margaret Cho, Alan Cumming, Chita Rivera, and Nina Hagen. Introduced with a cheeky honorific that puts her just behind the first lady of entertainment, she brings a one of a kind brand of comedy to the stage.

Cadence Video Poetry Screening: ceaseless, of the earth

Six video poems inspired by the still life traditions highlighted in the current exhibition Wallflowers explore how beauty and identity endure. Through quiet, surreal, and solitary approaches, these films reflect on former selves, absent loves, and homelands, suggesting that moments of pause help make sense of memory and experience. PNW-ACBS Opening Day 2026

At Fisherman's Terminal in Seattle, the Pacific Northwest chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society sets an Opening Day theme inspired by the Declaration’s landmark ideals of life, liberty, and the quest for happiness. Members of Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution are featured guests, and families are welcome. Presented as a Seattle Yacht Club Spirit Class fleet entry, the chapter’s coordinated skit brings together thirteen restored open-cockpit boats, each representing one of the original colonies. Every boat showcases a five foot white quill prop, skippers wear tricorn hats, and SAR and DAR guests appear in colonial attire. The lead boat will present a signing tableau as it passes the Seattle Yacht Club officers. In this category, four or more boats perform as a single entry, and judging considers showmanship, attire and actions, seamanship, and overall presentation. Only one entry is accepted per yacht club, boating group, or independent fleet. The chapter provides a table covering, oversized quills, and a display of the Declaration for the lead boat, along with red, white, and blue fan flags for each vessel, themed banners, and refreshments that include beverages, snacks, and lunch for SAR and DAR guests. SAR and DAR members may bring chapter flags, and Eric Olsen, WASSAR Color Guard Commander, will bring reproductions of colonial state navy flags. Skippers and first mates are encouraged to decorate generously in red, white, and blue to mark America 250. The day begins with a meetup at the Fisherman's Terminal marina, then the fleet heads to Elliott Bay for the start of the Opening Day Boat Parade. The PNW-ACBS boats will pass the Seattle Yacht Club officials, continue through the Montlake Cut, pause for lunch at the UW rowing facility at Conibear Shellhouse, and conclude the parade. When the Cut reopens to general traffic, SAR and DAR participants will be transported back to Fisherman's Terminal. DAR and SAR members are asked to RSVP in advance to ensure availability.

The lineup features Gene Lee, Wesley Holmes, Karl Kamakahi, Miss Min.d, Recess, Bgeezy, and Jame$ervin. There are no presales, entry is taken at the door. Admission is 25, or 15 for guests in favored attire of black, white, electric blue, or pink, and those looks receive priority entry. For adults only. sea sound feat. REZIDENT (Boat Party)

Set sail for a boat party at Lake Union Park featuring Rezident, the project of rising producer David Roif from Karlsruhe in Germany’s Baden-Württemberg region. His sound finds a sweet spot where house, electro, techno, and broader dance music meet, balancing dancefloor drive with looping, mantra-like repetition that can feel both celebratory and restorative. Influenced early by a steady diet of Deadmau5 and taking cues from progressive touchstones like Bicep, Rezident continues to build momentum. He began crafting tracks at age 12 after hearing a custom ringtone, experimenting with music software on a Windows laptop and honing essential techniques such as layering, simplifying, and stepping away to return with fresh ears. His releases often weave reverberant, deep house-tinged chords with crisp hi-hats and airy whooshes, leaning into a more minimal and candid approach that departs from his earlier, more commercial style. Ticketing rolls out in stages, with an early access registration period and an early access ticket release preceding the public sale.

How to Tell a Seabird's Tale: The Role of the Writer and Scientific Illustrator

Explore how science writers and illustrators turn data, field notes, and specimens into art focused on local seabirds. Three Pacific Northwest artists, including two writers and one illustrator, share how they gather information and shape it into engaging narratives and vivid images. Science illustrator and taxidermist Madison Mayfield, Assistant Collections Manager of the Burke Museum’s ornithology collection, offers stories from behind the scenes. Author and community scientist Maria Mudd Ruth explains how both data and the absence of data informed her new book on the Pigeon Guillemot, The Bird with Flaming Red Feet. Author and professional scientist Eric Wagner discusses approaches to collecting and interpreting data on nocturnal Rhinoceros Auklets for his new book, Seabirds as Sentinels. A succinct illustrated presentation leads into a lively conversation moderated by science journalist Sarah DeWeert. Guillemots, auklets, and other seabird specimens will be on display for a close look courtesy of the Burke Museum’s ornithology collection. General admission is $10, and Burke members attend for free.

Josh Garrels, Taylor Armstrong @ ST. MARK'S CATHEDRAL

Singer songwriter Josh Garrels brings his introspective, genre blending sound to Saint Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle, joined by guest Taylor Armstrong. Garrels is known for deeply personal lyrics set to a mix of pastoral indie folk, hip hop and orchestral textures. He co founded Small Voice Records, released Jacaranda on that label, and later reached the Billboard charts with Home. His body of work also includes Love & War & the Sea in Between, the holiday collection The Light Came Down, and Chrysaline, created in Muncie, Indiana and Charlottesville, Virginia with Isaac Wardell. His projects have featured collaborations with Mason Jar Music, the music film The Sea in Between and placements on television. Taylor Armstrong is a singer songwriter who writes and records primarily in his home studio. Drawing on a rural Northeast upbringing and now based in San Diego, his songs emphasize honesty, melody and connection. Presented as part of the Cathedrals Concerts Series from Abbey Arts in Seattle, the evening offers a relaxed, quiet atmosphere with an open floor. Low key picnics are welcome, and outside alcohol is not permitted. Seating includes padded chairs, benches and spots on the floor near the stage. Most seating is open aside from some reserved front rows, and availability can be limited at larger shows. Cushions or blankets are encouraged for comfort, and low back floor chairs up to 22 inches in total height are allowed. The event is all ages, and some seating will be available. A bar will serve those with valid ID, with proceeds supporting local music and nonprofits through the help of local sponsors. Non alcoholic elixirs, local beer, wine, cider and snacks will be offered. The cathedral is ADA accessible, with wheelchair seating near the front to the left of the stage. Only service animals as defined by the ADA are permitted. The setting is intentionally quiet, so conversation and phone use should be minimized and devices silenced. Entry may pause during songs to preserve the acoustics. Cameras with mechanical shutters are not allowed. There is no separate soundproof room, and sounds from the lobby carry into the hall, so plan accordingly when bringing young children.

Expect upbeat, dance-ready instrumentals with plenty of space for the horn section to stretch out, and, at many performances, surprises such as guest vocalists, audience participation, sing-alongs, and even the occasional circus flair. The band has shared stages with artists including Femi Kuti, Roy Hargrove, Mike Stern, and The Soul Rebels, and in New York has appeared at notable rooms like Brooklyn Bowl, the Blue Note, and Joe’s Pub. Beyond the stage, they created Jazz In The Classroom, an in-school program that has reached students for nearly a decade. The lineup features educators and performers connected with Berklee, New England Conservatory, NYU, Broadway pits, first-call studio sessions, and international touring.
