The 4th annual Dolly Dash 5K Race for Reading celebrates 20 years of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in West Virginia. Participation supports the statewide book gifting program that sends free, high quality books to children from birth to age five to build early literacy, strengthen family engagement, and encourage school readiness and lifelong success. Each race registration funds one child’s annual enrollment. Registrants receive a commemorative T-shirt featuring a 20th anniversary banner. Shirt pickup is available on race day, and arrangements can be made by email for those not attending. On-site check in takes place near the starting line at the shelter by the big red tent. Expect vendors, shaved ice, music, and playground fun. A Best Dressed Dolly contest will be held with child, adult, and pet Doggy Parton categories, and participation requires race registration. The 5K follows the contest. Awards include commemorative locally made wooden embossed medals for first place and first runner up male and female in each age group. Children in strollers are not eligible for awards in child categories. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. Options to register, become a sponsor, or donate are available.

No prior sewing experience is required. This beginner class covers the essentials of using a sewing machine, working with rotary cutters, rulers and templates, and calculating fabric to reduce waste. The project leads to a finished quilt. Participants should bring a sewing machine and scissors. The quilt uses 12 fat quarters, and fabric can be selected at the shop. Valley Health and Enslow Park Presbyterian Church host a back-to-school kids event built around a playful space theme. Families can explore interactive stations with hands-on activities, learn about healthy habits through kid-friendly health education, and enjoy food, games, and a few surprises. Expect giveaways and school supply fun, plus a dunk tank for splashy excitement. The gathering brings the community together to connect, learn, and get ready for the new school year.

An annual backpack and school supply giveaway offers free, brand-new backpacks stocked with essentials to help elementary students start the school year ready. A total of 120 backpacks will be available. No purchase is required. Each child is limited to one backpack, and distribution will be on a first come, first served basis until all are distributed.

Meetings are held at the Boyd County Public Library Midland Branch and center on encouragement, education, and conversation. New participants are welcome. The group is free and open to the community, and a virtual option may be available by request.

This weekly quilting class welcomes confident beginners to create a Bouquet of Hydrangeas quilt featuring a variety of patchwork blocks in a calming palette based on your favorite fabrics. The pattern is written as a block of the month, yet the project will progress week by week, leading to a finished piece measuring about 58.5 by 73.5 inches. The class fee is $10, and the pattern is purchased separately. Please bring a sewing machine and basic sewing supplies, then choose fabrics from any collection available in the shop.

Get a head start on handmade Christmas gifts with a sewing session designed for confident beginners. Registration is required. Each week, a selection of projects is featured in the shop and classroom so participants can plan ahead while finding what they need. If a favorite idea is not on the list, help is available to bring it to life. The class fee is $25 and the session lasts about two hours. Please bring your sewing machine and a basic sewing kit. Fabric and other supplies are available at the shop. Friends are welcome to attend together for a crafty day. The list is open ended, so other projects are welcome too.

Stop by the Huntington Children’s Museum for a Volunteer Open House to learn what it’s like to be part of the museum family. The event runs in-person and includes a guided tour, a rundown of ways volunteers can get involved (from helping with programs and special events to supporting behind the scenes), and time to meet staff and current volunteers. Light refreshments will be available, and RSVP is required so the museum can staff appropriately.
